Huntington Beach is one of those magical places that boasts families having a great time, surf competitions, and of course your party animals getting blacked out drunk on the streets. Don’t worry though! There are plenty of police officers constantly patrolling the area to make sure that order is kept at all times. Huntington Beach has one of the coolest downtown strips in all of Southern California full of restaurants, bars, shops, and a street festival every Friday night! One of the coolest things to experience is when they have the U.S. surf open during the month of June because thousands of people from all over the world come to spectate at this spectacular event. The pier here is also one of my favorites because it has a cool restaurant you can eat at. How many other restaurants can you eat where you feel like you’re on a cruise ship surrounded by the sea? I haven’t experienced many of those in my life and I bet you haven’t either.
One of the things that makes Huntington so great in my opinion is that diversity and the cultural differences you can experience. There’s authentic Mexican food, Italian food, great sushi, and a bunch of other great restaurants all located conveniently on one street. My all time favorite spot on Main Street is called Fred’s. Fred’s has locations on both Dana Point and Huntington Beach so it is considered a “chain” but it is tightly managed by the owner and there aren’t enough restaurants to the point that it’s lost that authentic touch. They have an all you can eat chips and salsa bar (just like Sharkeez in Newport Beach) and a delightful outside patio with a bar. The cool thing is that this restaurant is perfect for a family looking to grab lunch or dinner after a day at the beach but is also suitable for those looking to let loose and get some drinks. The most dangerous part about Fred’s is the staircase leading up to the restaurant! I’ve never seen it happen but I can almost guarantee that intoxicated people have left that bar and fell down about 150 steps. It’s funny to picture that happening in your head but I’m also being serious… If you’re visiting Fred’s and tying one on, don’t forget about the stairs!
My next favorite spot in Huntington Beach would have to be a bar called “Sapsuckers”. This bar is two stories and brings in some of the best musical talent of any other place on Main St. They always have a well known DJ spinning records in the booth so everyone can enjoy their favorite dance music in a very energetic setting. Sapsuckers also has an awesome patio upstairs that is quite large and can fit about 100 people. Whether you’re having an intimate conversation with your loved one on the patio or getting freaky with that stranger you just met on the dance floor, Sapsuckers has aspects about it that everyone can enjoy.
I highly recommend taking a trip to Huntington Beach if you’re ever in Southern California. I don’t care if you’ve been there one hundred times (like me) or have never been there before in your life. If you want a unique beach city scene with tons of different bars, restaurants, and activities constantly going on throughout the year, Huntington Beach can be an awesome choice for you. There are tons of hotels located in Huntington Beach that are a little on the pricey side, but there are also tons of cheaper options about 10 minutes away from Huntington in Irvine, Tusin, and Costa Mesa, Calfiornia.
